2. Justin Simmons, Safety
The veteran safety joined the Falcons on a one-year, $7.5 million deal in August after he was let go by the Denver Broncos. The two-time Pro Bowl safety was looking to help Atlanta build off its performance in 2023 as they allowed the eighth-fewest passing yards per game (202.9).
However, that didn’t materialize as the Falcons’ pass defense took a step back in 2024 under first-year head coach Raheem Morris.
Atlanta was ranked 22nd in passing yards per game allowed (224.5) and second in passing touchdowns allowed (34). The Panthers allowed the most passing touchdowns in the NFL last season (35).
As for Simmons, the veteran safety produced 62 combined tackles, seven pass deflections, two tackles for loss, and two interceptions.
While the Falcons struggled in pass defense, the 31-year-old defender held his own. Simmons possessed a 59.5 completion percentage allowed on targets, an 81.9 pass rating allowed when targeted, and gave up three receiving touchdowns.
However, Simmons’ PFF grades left a lot to be desired. The veteran safety had a 60.8 coverage grade (85th among 171 qualified safeties) and a 53.8 run defense grade (149th). Some teams might not want to take a chance on Simmons based on how he fared in stopping the run and pass coverage.
That said, for a contender who needs a veteran safety to plug in for the 2025 season, Simmons might have something left in the tank. Spotrac projects Simmons’ calculated market as a one-year, $5.8 million deal, which sounds about right after he got $7.5 million last year.
