Looking at Atlanta's current roster, there are multiple players who are on shaky ground. Whether it is needing more time at the lower levels or struggling veterans, the Atlanta roster is set up for a lot of overturn. Three roster spots must be created for Sean Murphy, Spencer Strider, and Ronald Acuna Jr. when the trio returns from their respective injuries. This is to say nothing of the possible roster spots Atlanta could decide to open for James McCann, Craig Kimbrel, Jessie Chavez, and Alex Verdugo.
The Braves are in an interesting spot as they debate the team's current options. While the rotation and starters are locked in, the bullpen and bench remain in flux. With this in mind, let's look at Braves players whose roster spots appear to be on the shakiest ground.
1. Drake Baldwin
Sean Murphy's injury altered Atlanta's timetable of how quickly they wanted to bring Baldwin to the next level. The Atlanta catcher has been impressive in early-season action and looks the part of a future franchise catcher. Working counts and getting consistent hard contact have made it easy to justify keeping both Murphy and Baldwin on the active roster. However, it wouldn't be a shock to see the Braves opt to give the young catcher a bit more seasoning.
James McCann and Sean Murphy would be a strong veteran tandem that keeps Murphy in the everyday lineup. Are the Braves ready to truly platoon Murphy? The answer to this question should decide how safe Baldwin's roster spot truly is. If Atlanta isn't willing to take at-bats from Murphy, the young catcher would be better served to get more starting experience at the lower level.
Atlanta signing McCann in the first place suggested the team could go this route, and it remains on the table. It falls on the shoulders of Baldwin to make it impossible in the first weeks of the season to deny he is ready for the next level.
