The Atlanta Falcons are very quickly reaching difficult decisions when it comes to pending extensions for Kyle Pitts, Drake London, and Bijan Robinson. While each of these players has earned a new contract, Bijan is understandably garnering the most attention due to being in the discussion as the league's best rusher. This explains why Robinson's camp was likely keeping a close eye on a recent extension between De'Von Achane and the Miami Dolphins.
Achane signed a contract extension worth $68 million over four years. This only adds to the notion that the market has been reset at the position on the heels of a recent extension with Saquon Barkley. The star rusher leads all backs, making an average of $20.6 annually. Coming in behind Barkley is current San Francisco 49ers star running back Christian McCaffrey, who is making an average of $19 million.
With all of this in mind, Achane's massive extension should be the final straw in pushing Robinson's deal into record-setting territory. What will be interesting for Atlanta is whether the franchise attempts to reach an eye-popping total on a longer-term deal pushing $100 million, or if the team opts for a shorter extension that surpasses the annual value of Barkley's deal.
Achane's Extension Reminds Falcons of Continually Rising Bijan Robinson Cost
No matter the avenue the Falcons choose to take in negotiations, there isn't any valid debate to be had about what the team must do. You're in no position to lose one of the league's most dynamic playmakers, who was often a lone source of your offense in the 2025 season. Robinson piled up 2,255 scrimmage yards in the 2025 season and did so much work that won't show up on the box score.
Often Robinson was met in the box or caught the ball with nowhere to go and found a way to wiggle his way for a positive play. This speaks to why Achane's deal served as confirmation that Robinson should break records when signing a new contract. It will be interesting to watch how quickly the Falcons opt to move on a player who is the current face of the franchise.
With the continued questions around the quarterback position and a defense that remains a work in progress, there really is no viable challenger to Robinson's status as the clear face of the Falcons. All of this adds up to a healthy new contract that should be heading towards Bijan a bit sooner after Achane's extension served as a reminder that the longer the Falcons wait, the more expensive it will become.
