Considering the wealth of options the Atlanta Braves currently have rostered when it comes to the team's starting rotation, adding to the position comes as a bit of a surprise. However, that is exactly what the franchise did, signing Austin Gomber to a minor league deal in what is a clear reclamation project. Gomber has 124 career starts with a record of 35-47 and a career ERA of 5.08.

These numbers point to the fact that the signing is a reclamation project that serves as an innings eater for the minor leagues. This is where Gomber started the 2026 season in the Texas Rangers minor league system and offered an ERA well north of seven. This led to the two sides parting ways, opening the door for the Atlanta signing in what is clearly both a bit of a reclamation project and more likely an effort to eat innings for the Gwinnett Stripers.

Both Bryce Elder and JR Ritchie were expected to be important pieces at this level. Obviously, both starters have earned their rotation spots along with Didier Fuentes, who will continue to work out of the Atlanta bullpen. For Gomber, it is simply a chance at a reset with hopes of breathing life back into a failing career.

Atlanta still has the pending returns of Hurston Waldrep and Spencer Schwellenbach, pointing out what an uphill battle it would be for Gomber to have a chance to make an impact at the next level.

Braves Add Surprising Reclamation Project Adding Austin Gomber

Not only do the Braves have a great current rotation with Chris Sale, Spencer Strider, Bryce Elder, JR Ritchie, and Grant Holmes, but the team has a trio of former starters in the bullpen. Reynaldo Lopez, Didier Fuentes, and Martin Perez have all been relegated to relief roles due to the incredible depth the franchise has in its rotation.

All of this makes Gomber's role clear, with the starter simply hoping that a change of scenery will breathe life back into his career. For the Braves to give Gomber an opportunity, there would need to be a handful of injuries and a clear turnaround at the minor league level.

While this is a possibility, fans don't want to entertain it doesn't hurt to add the depth and take a flyer on an experienced starter. The interesting thing will be watching how the Braves navigate their current choices and whether or not they could look to utilize the impressive depth ahead of this year's trade deadline.

Regardless of the answer, there is no denying that Gomber has been given a second chance with the league's top current team. It will be entertaining to watch whether Gwinnett has answers that have eluded the southpaw in an underwhelming start this season.
