The Atlanta Braves' future at the shortstop position remains very much in question. While Nick Allen has been incredible defensively, it is hard to justify his offensive performance in Atlanta's current lineup. If this were the 2023 season, the shortstop would be the perfect option in a great defender saving runs at the bottom of the Braves' lineup as an offensive afterthought. Even last season, this would have been a welcome presence with Arcia offering comparable or worse production at the plate. However, with the offensive implosion of Michael Harris and Ozzie Albies, it is far more difficult to swallow.
With this in mind, the Braves are keeping an eye on the position, looking both in-house and around the league for the next long-term fit.
One exciting option would've been Houston Astros star Jeremy Peña. After the team parted ways with Kyle Tucker, it was fair to wonder if the veteran franchise was ready for a rebuild. One that perhaps would give the Braves a chance to steal a franchise player. However, this speculation has come to an end based on a myriad of reasons, including Houston's current standing and the incredible season Pena is enjoying.
A Perfect Atlanta Braves Fit Falls Off the Board
Further cold water was poured on this idea with this week's news that the Astros and Peñahave been engaged in extension talks. These talks were halted when the shortstop changed agents, bringing in Scott Boras as his new agent. Not only does this mean the Astros intend to keep Peña, but it also signals a change that will prevent the Braves from attempting a trade or signing of the infielder even if things were to change in Houston.
Boras is notable in the fact that the Braves often shy away from targeting his clients. While it isn't an established rule, it simply takes looking back at Atlanta's recent history to see how rare it is for Atlanta to sign anyone who is working with the agent. This is likely due to an unorthodox approach that demands the absolute most of every team.
It is great for the players but less than ideal for fans and teams hoping to pay market value to retain or add pieces. Boras being attached to Peña means any hopes of a deal now or in the future are completely dead.
