While the Atlanta Braves clearly have their own problems to navigate, there is no getting around the joy fans have found in the New York Mets' early-season collapse. The franchise has already fired its manager and is far out of any reasonable playoff contention. No matter how the overall season series might be going with Atlanta, there is no debating that it is the Mets in the worst position based on their record, payroll, and an owner who simply cannot get out of his own way.
One would think that Cohen would have learned you cannot buy a winning team, with the recipe for elite winning being a difficult one. As much as the Los Angeles Dodgers might spend, there is no getting around the fact that they have a savvy front office taking advantage of others' mistakes.
Mooke Betters, Shohei Ohtani, and Freddie Freeman are all two-time defending champions due to their former franchises making a clear mistake. New York hasn't paid attention to this but appears to hold the belief that you can simply spend your way into relevance.
This obviously isn't going according to plan: double-digit games below .500 and already punting on the 2026 season. Still, Cohen has made it clear that President of Baseball Operations David Stearns isn't in any danger of losing his role at the end of the 2026 season.
Braves Can't Help but Laugh at Awful New York Decision-Making
Bringing back the decision-maker who helped form this roster is objectively hilarious. The Braves can't help but appreciate the decision, understanding it likely means the Mets aren't going to be a division threat anytime soon. Even the Washington Nationals appear to have more capable front office options, with New York sticking to their current leadership that led them into the mess they now sit in.
It wasn't New York's fired manager who put together a roster that struggled to provide any offensive consistency. Looking at the situation objectively, there isn't a lot the former manager could've done differently with the pieces in place, simply not delivering to expectations.
With this in mind, even in the middle of what has been a frustrating stretch of baseball, the Braves can take some joy in the current state their division rival finds itself in. Embracing a decision-maker who authored this season's struggles and doesn't have a recent resume to suggest this is changing anytime soon. No question, it is a needed off-the-field win for the Braves.
