It has become undeniably clear that Orlando Arcia is no longer Atlanta's starting shortstop. While the veteran is still in the lineup at times, Nick Allen has won the bulk of the starts over the last week. It was a quiet transition, with the team selling the move as an attempt to have Arcia more rested and given some days off. Allen took full advantage of this chance, finding ways to get on base and flashing his glove at every given opportunity.
Despite how things might play out with Nick Allen, the Braves have made the right decision in keeping Arcia out of the lineup. The team was incredibly patient with the veteran over the last two years, giving every chance to turn things around. Not since the first half of the 2023 season has Arica been a reliable option at the plate. In the months since, the shortstop has become an increasing liability and doesn't offer the glove of Allen. If the team is going to put up with an underwhelming offensive option, it is the obvious decision to go with the superior glove.
Nick Allen has Clearly Supplanted Orlando Arcia as Braves' Starting Shortstop
Making the decision to move off Arcia is one that does provide the bright spot of improved bench depth. While Arcia isn't a great pinch-hitting option, the Braves can benefit from the flexibility. Losing Profar greatly hurt the team's ability to carry extra pitching while having defensive flexibility. Putting Arcia on the bench gives the team a utility option with starting experience.
Being patient with Arcia would have been the wrong decision with how hot Allen was, not only in spring training but to start the regular season. With that said, this isn't an unquestionable decision with Allen's lack of proven offensive production. The Braves could still go back to Arcia if Allen cannot stay above the Mendoza line and provide stellar defense.
No matter which direction the team chooses to go, there isn't a perfect answer. Both options have concerning flaws and point a finger at the team's decision not to add to the position in the offseason. Even if it were an aging veteran or someone to contend with Arcia, the lack of moves at the position was surprising.
Nick Allen's surprise production is helping cover this up for the moment and allows the team to move away from a platoon and put Arcia consistently on the bench. It is the right decision for the team and moves a low offensive ceiling in the right direction.
