The Atlanta Braves made an exciting decision with Didier Fuentes making the team's Opening Day roster. However, the 2025 starter will be making the move to the bullpen, the perfect solution to attempt to rebuild a player the franchise badly mismanaged a season ago. It is important to note here that Fuentes more than earned his promotion, tossing 9.0 scoreless spring innings while striking out 17 hitters. Understandably, Fuentes would come into spring training with a fire inside himself after last season's mistakes left questions about the top prospect.

Atlanta brought up Fuentes to pitch out of pure desperation, watching the prospect deliver a 13.50 ERA and three ugly losses. Even after an incredible spring training, it makes sense for Fuentes to be moved to the bullpen in an effort to help wipe away the memories of a season ago. The Braves should've shelved the prospect after one rough outing, but instead opted to let the young pitcher continue absorbing punishment, leaving questions about whether or not his confidence was damaged.

Spring training appeared to be a clear indication that this wasn't the case; however, there is no denying the pressure and focus shifts drastically on Opening Day. Putting Fuentes in the bullpen, allowing the Braves to ease him into things in low-leverage situations and slowly build his confidence, is the perfect solution to last season's missteps.

Braves Make Perfect Decision Elevating Didier Fuentes to Team's Impressive Bullpen

Manager Walt Weiss needs to understand that Fuentes is still only 20 years old and should be handled very cautiously at the start of the season. With plenty of high-leverage options at the back of Atlanta's bullpen, the Braves should view the young reliever as mop-up duty or a low-leverage innings eater at the start of the 2026 season.

This isn't to say that this is the role Fuentes will remain in, as his immense talent is obvious. It wouldn't be at all surprising to see the first month of the season end with fans clamoring for a return to the rotation and Fuentes being used in high-leverage moments. However, this can only happen if the ghosts of last season are overcome, meaning Atlanta's decision-makers play things far smarter than they did last season.

It shouldn't be difficult with Raisel Iglesias and Robert Suarez handling the final two frames and Atlanta having experienced options for the middle innings. The door shouldn't be shut to Fuentes working his way into an important role, but it must be after this spring production has translated and the pitcher's confidence is rebuilt.

For Fuentes, it is an incredible opportunity that has been more than earned based on an incredible spring performance. Atlanta has to hope it is a sign of the pitcher turning the corner and that last year's struggles prove to be the outlier.
