The Atlanta Braves are expected to attempt to trade expiring contracts at this year’s deadline. Failing to reach anywhere close to .500 has sealed the team’s fate and left it clear that it is time to sell. However, Atlanta is in an interesting position in the fact they are still looking to win next season. If the team moves away from pieces, it will be Marcell Ozuna, Raisel Iglesias, or other veteran options who no longer play into the team’s future plans.
While this is the correct path forward, the team would be wise to consider one exception. If the Braves are going to consider buying anything at the deadline, it must be starting pitching. Considering the current injured list, this is far from a hot take. The Braves are patching games together with a struggling bullpen constantly switching pieces up and down from Gwinnett. Adding one pitcher isn’t going to fix all of these concerns, but it is a step in the right direction.
The Braves Should Check in on Sandy Alcantara at Trade Deadline
One potential option the Braves should be checking in on is struggling rival pitcher Sandy Alcantara. The former ace is in the middle of a miserable season and simply doesn’t look to be the same pitcher he was prior to the injury. While many teams might have the same idea, it could be an ideal time to check in on the starter and see if Miami is willing to sell low.
If this isn’t the case, the Braves are better off adding a cheap option in free agency or in a deal when Atlanta’s expiring contracts are moved. If Alcantara can find a way to find positive regression, the starter would instantly be one of the team’s best three starting options. This would allow you to go into next season having one of the best rotations in baseball.
It isn’t about adding a player that is going to save you from the dumpster fire that is the 2025 season, but looking to add a potentially elite piece that sends a message to your fanbase that you’re committed to fixing this team’s future.
Regardless, the Braves need to add a starter, whether it is a player with such high potential or a cheap option to simply help the Braves eat innings and survive the rest of the season. This is the most likely path, but checking in on the division rival is the right decision for the struggling franchise.
