The Atlanta Braves have a handful of interesting free agency decisions to make, with free agent Raisel Iglesias being among the most interesting. The veteran right-hander finished the 2026 season with a 2.55 ERA and 34 saves, offering manager Walt Weiss a consistency that is elusive when it comes to late innings. However, there were clear struggles at two different points in the season, and Iglesias will be 37 before the 2027 season begins, leaving a clear question as to how many prime seasons are left in the tank.

Adding a wrinkle to the decision as well is the current setup option, Robert Suarez, who has closing experience and could easily transition into the role. Where fans could counter against this is pointing out that Didier Fuentes could be utilized in the rotation, and Dylan Lee struggled over the final weeks of the 2026 season.

Having a reliable setup option could be in question, making it a clear argument for re-signing Iglesias and keeping a core together that drove winning at a high level. No question, the Braves could find this to be a mistake due to age, but they can lessen the risk by signing another one-year deal that could be laden with incentives.

Suarez and Igelsias put into a role to compete for the setup and closing jobs makes a great deal of sense and solves an early offseason question. Atlanta remains an incredibly talented core and is more than capable of going on a World Series run if the rotation can stay healthy and the lineup learns to show up in the postseason the same way they do the rest of the year.

Braves Have Difficult Upcoming Decision to Make on Aging Free Agent Closer Raisel Iglesias

Iglesias is coming off his first season as an All-Star and could garner a bit more attention from other teams as well due to his accomplishments. It is plausible the veteran's price range is out of Atlanta's comfort zone, and the wiser path is to add a setup option and put Suarez into the closer role. Looking at both sides of how things could play out makes it clear why it is a difficult decision.

One that is getting more attention due to Atlanta's core being locked down at least for one more season. Martinz Perez, Tyler Mahle, Dominic Smith, and Iglesias are the bigger free-agent decisions the team is going to need to make as the most notable potential re-signings.

Ronald Acuna Jr. and Ozzie Albies both have team options that are obvious decisions, as extremely affordable stability. No question, Iglesias has an argument as the most difficult decision the Braves have to make.
