Covered over by the Atlanta Braves 2025 misery is the emergence of Nick Allen as a defensive start. After replacing Orlando Arcia in the first weeks of the season the infielder has wasted little time building a case to stay beyond this season. While the offense is still well below average it is hard not to remain impressed with the defender. Allen is second in the league in defensive runs saved at shortstop trailing only Taylor Walls.
It turns back the clock back to the days when the Braves had an elite defender at the position and gave the team at least one highlight each game. While the offense is never going to be elite the team might have found its answer at the position moving forward.
If the rest of Atlanta's veterans were living up to expectations, Allen would've already locked down the job. The vision for Arcia was a solid defender who was expected to give very little offense from the bottom of the lineup. This didn't play out as expected with both the bat and glove regressing throughout his tenure. However, the point remains that by design the team was supposed to be able to hide the position offensively.
The Braves Might Have Their 2026 Shortstop in Nick Allen
Whether the Braves attempt to rebuild after this season or simply retool there is every reason to consider keeping Allen. Watching the infielder's defense each night offers at least some escape from the dumpster fire the team has become. Seeing such a talented unit reduced to this level of irrelevance is shocking on its face.
Still, Allen's accomplishments defensively deserve credit and have earned the infielder a place in future discussions. It makes sense to retain Allen as the starter into the 2026 season unless the Braves get the chance to add an established offensive star at the position. Any other answer simply doesn't make sense with Allen's offense capable enough to warrant his incredible defense.
All of this adds up to an interesting story to keep an eye on as Atlanta's frustrating season continues. If Allen can maintain his current level of offensive production, there is reason to believe the Braves will head into next season without making a change. This is the correct decision when you consider the overwhelming list of needs Atlanta is going to need to address if they have any hopes of contending next season. With this in mind, it seems Allen is well on his way to playing himself into Atlanta's long-term plans.
