The Atlanta Braves are down in North Port, Florida, for Spring Training as they prepare for the 2025 campaign. Last season, the Braves went 89-73 and made the playoffs. They were eventually bounced in the Wild Card Round by the San Diego Padres.
They are hoping this season will be different. With Atlanta's first Spring Training game happening on Feb. 22 at 1:05 p.m. EST, they are still looking at different options to improve their roster.
According to MLB Insider Héctor Gómez, the Braves are one of five teams that are expressing interest in free-agent pitcher Jose Quintana.
The New York Mets, San Diego Padres, Texas Rangers, and Milwaukee Brewers are the other teams who are interested in Quintana's services. The 36-year-old has spent the last two seasons with the Mets and is seeking to land somewhere before the 2025 season rolls around.
The Braves' interest in Quintana shouldn't come as a surprise, as they seek to add another starting pitcher into the fold. In his 13-year playing career, Quintana has gone 102-103 as a starter with a 3.74 ERA. He's compiled 1,727 strikeouts with a 1.27 WHIP.
Despite going into his 14th season as a pro, Quintana had a solid season for the Mets last year. He went 10-10 with a 3.75 ERA and 135 strikeouts in 170.1 innings pitched.
Quintana isn't a world-beater at this stage of his career but could still put up solid numbers without getting hammered at the plate.
Gómez revealed that the Pittsburgh Pirates offered Quintana a one-year, $5.5 million deal, which isn't a high price. That makes it clearer as to why multiple teams have an interest in him.
We'll have to see how things shake out in the coming days but the Braves are still looking at different avenues to improve their roster.
