The Atlanta Braves made a difficult decision this week with Eli White being ready to return from the IL after suffering a concussion. Veteran outfielder Jose Azocar was designated for assignment despite flashing a great glove in the outfield and collecting five hits in only 15 at-bats in the 2026 season. There wasn't anything Azocar could've realistically done to give himself a better shot at remaining on Atlanta's roster. Still, it is an understandable decision for a loaded roster that has continued to find surprise contributors.
After a slow start to the season, White was showing signs of life at the plate, three for his last nine and offering a stolen base as well. The veteran has more history with Atlanta's roster and offers a similiar mix of speed and defense leaving the team little decision. It is the right move even if it comes after Azocar did everything reasonably asked to stick on Atlanta's roster.
For the Braves, this is a welcome problem to have with a stacked roster offering far more production than expected. Dominic Smith, Jorge Mateo, and White are all examples of players that have found themselves in surprisingly meaningful roles and made the most of the chances given.
Azocar shouldn't have any problem bouncing back whether it is a return to Atlanta on a minor league deal or a new landing spot on an injury-riddled roster. The veteran is a proven glove and pinch running option that teams looking for depth will jump at the chance to add.
Braves Part Ways with Jose Azocar After Eli White's Return from Injury
What will be very interesting with White now back in the rotation, is how the Braves opt to navigate its current lineup decisions. Mauricio Dubon has primarily played in the outfield over the last two weeks while shortstop Ha-Seong Kim has struggled only getting two hits in his first 23 at-bats. This leaves the door open for the Braves to bench Kim and put Dubon back at short with White healthy.
There is also Mateo lurking who has offered a .305 average this season and great speed on the bases. Mateo is primarily a shortstop but does have history of playing in the outfield making it clear the ineresting decisions that lie ahead of manager Walt Weiss.
All of this helps explain why Azocar's exit makes sense and the Braves are in a better position for it. As unfortunate as it might be for a player that performed well in limited chances, it speaks to the depth of a team that simply has higher upside options.
