The Atlanta Braves made a predictable move over the weekend, shifting the struggling Reynaldo Lopez into the bullpen to make room in the rotation with a wealth of options. Heading into the season, there was reason to wonder if the franchise should consider adding a final starting option. Fast forward a month into the season, and the surprise performances of JR Ritchie, Martin Perez, and Bryce Elder have left the Braves with a welcome problem.

Add in the fact that Spencer Strider is very close to a return, and the Braves had no choice but to shift Lopez back into a relief role. This is where the former starter previously thrived and should give Atlanta a bit of needed depth after Raisel Iglesias was forced to the IL. For Lopez, it cannot be an unexpected demotion after struggling in each of his previous two starts.

The right-hander gave up eight runs in only 6.0 innings with six walks, clearly facing control issues. Shifting Lopez back into the pen allows the veteran to refocus and refine his approach. If the results are elite, the Braves have gained another great setup option and can explore stretching Lopez back out if needed.

However, the more likely path is for Lopez to remain in the bullpen with both Spencer Schwellenbach and Hurston Waldrep expected back in the coming weeks. This leaves Grant Holmes, Chris Sale, Perez, Elder, Ritchie, Didier Fuentes, Strider, Schwellenbach, and Waldrep competing for five spots in Atlanta's rotation.

Braves Had No Choice but to Demote Struggling Lopez Due to Wealth of Options

It is incredible to consider this turnaround when just a season ago, the Braves were scrambling to find viable starting options. Elder was a liability on the mound, and none of the team's Opening Day rotation could stay healthy. While there are likely still injuries ahead, it is hard to believe the Braves are going to have anything but success with such a warchest of arms to plug and play.

For Lopez, this is the reality of a subpar performance that opened the door to his demotion. Thanks to their superior options, it only takes one or two average starts for the Braves to have ample motivation to turn the page. This is all before a trio of Waldrep, Schwellenbach, and Strider have returned from their respective injuries.

It is hard to find a comparable roster in terms of starting depth, with Lopez remaining a clear rotation option for every other team in the league. As harsh a reality as this might be, it is a struggle of Lopez's own making, and the right-hander still has the advantage of playing for the National League's best team. One that continues to push all the right buttons at the perfect time as the Braves continue to roll through the early weeks of the 2026 season.
