The Atlanta Braves have been pointed to as a potential landing spot for starter Tarik Skubal. Amid current injuries and rotation struggles, the fit makes increasing sense. However, the issue for the Braves is understanding the price it will take to win the undeniable bidding war that will start when Skubal hits the trade market. Adding the southpaw is only an option if the Braves believe that an extension is already in place.

Talking Skubal's camp into not hitting the open market is going to be an obvious feat, as one of the most accomplished pitchers over the last four seasons. Watching Skubal's level of dominance makes it clear that the reasons to add the starter far outweigh future production concerns if the Braves can see a path to locking down Skubal beyond just the 2026 season.

Paying what it would take to land Skubal as a two-month rental would be only worth it if the season ends in a World Series win. This is obviously a potential reality, but it creates a difficult decision for a front office that is obviously looking at the big picture and understanding the level of judgment that will be passed if this doesn't prove to be the case and the prospects you spend to get the deal done pan out.

Braves Can Only Afford to Add Left-Hander Tarik Skubal in Very Specific Trade Scenario

Reasons to spend top-dollar on Skubal are obvious when you look at the future of Atlanta's rotation. The franchise is still attempting to replace the lost production of Max Fried, who has spent the past two seasons with the New York Yankees. Spencer Strider remains injury-prone and hasn't lived up to expectations, while Chris Sale isn't going to defeat Father Time forever.

Trading for Skubal and signing the starter to sit at the top of the team's rotation offers a level of needed future stability. Didier Fuentes, JR Ritchie, Hurston Waldrep, Spencer Schwellenbach, and AJ Smith-Shawver all remain exciting possibilities but continue to deal with injuries or inconsistent performances.

Skubal takes some of the pressure off your current development pieces and allows the franchise to understand the incredible stability at the top of the rotation moving forward. For Skubal, it could be tempting to join a franchise that has a clear window of contention open and is clearly a far better offensive situation than what Detroit has offered. The Braves should be active considering the fit, but understanding that an extension is required for a trade to make any level of sense.
