The Atlanta Braves have leaned heavily on their bullpen throughout the 2026 season, with Robert Suarez, Raisel Iglesias, Didier Fuentes, and Dylan Lee all having stretches of elite production. However, there is reason to wonder if the team would add to the pen, making it an even clearer area of strength and helping cover for a rotation that has been unable to get deep into games with any level of consistency. This led to a level of speculation as to whether or not A.J. Minter and the Braves could reunite.
Minter was an important piece of the 2021 World Series team, departing in recent seasons and being a part of a dismal New York Mets roster for the first half of the 2026 season. The southpaw offered a 2.35 ERA over 23.0 innings pitched with 20 strikeouts and consistently produced at a level that reminded Braves fans of the player he once was. A trade made sense for both sides, before Minter became one of the first pieces dealt ahead of Monday's deadline.
The Mets sent the veteran to the Minnesota Twins in exchange for a trio of underwhelming prospects. It is surprising that the Braves were unable or unwilling to match this level of compensation for a player who has previously meant so much to the franchise. It would be a fitting addition, one that would've unquestionably given Atlanta the deepest pen in the league once Suarez makes his return.
Braves Missed Out on Perfect Reunion Opportunity with Current Twin A.J. Minter
It should be noted here as well that Minter would be a needed left-handed presence after recent struggles from Lee. The last month has been an outlier in every way for Lee, but there is reason to want a level of insurance in case the struggles were to continue or appear again during a potential postseason run. Minter covered a lot of bases for a franchise well aware of what the reliever can produce when he's at the top of his game.
With that said, there is plenty of time for the Braves to continue to make moves and bring in depth. There are arguments remaining to add to nearly every position, making it understandable why perhaps the bullpen and Minter weren't at the top of Atlanta's list when it comes to deadline deals.
Minter has joined Minnesota and will play out his contract with the Twins before hitting free agency and giving the Braves another chance for a reunion that could still make sense in the upcoming offseason.
