Atlanta Braves fans have reason for excitement not only with this week's return of Spencer Strider but also for the fast-approaching Ronald Acuña Jr. reunion as well. Atlanta fans have patiently waited for the 2023 MVP to return as they remain mired in mediocrity. There is a level of belief that the return of Acuña will prove to be the missing piece that allows this team ot go on a run. As they attempt the impossible of chasing down both the Phillies and Mets in the National League East, they will need the best version of the star outfielder.

With this in mind, there is one area in particular that Acuña can help Atlanta. A recent SBNation piece explored how Atlanta has fared against the fastball using xwOBA ranks dating back to the 2019 season.

After ranking 1st overall in 2022 and 2023, the team took a dive all the way to 9th. This brings us to an alarming 2025 ranking where the Braves currently sit 20th in the league. It is important to note that these are on fastballs only. Atlanta ranks 12th overall, struggling badly against the fastball this season. This is where the addition of the star outfielder has a chance to be unexpectedly impactful.

Braves are Turning to Ronald Acuña Jr. to Fix Fastball Woes

The Atlanta star needs to be a consistent presence capable of neutralizing fastball pitchers. The outfielder's advanced numbers point to this ability and the likely impact his return will have. Only Marcell Ozuna has been consistently reliable in Atlanta's lineup against this approach. For Atlanta, it is a notable concern and one likely to haunt the team in any potential postseason run.

Ronald Acuña Jr.'s return seemed destined to happen late in the weekend or early next week, with the outfielder continuing to play at a high level in his minor league stint. Watching the joy with which the outfielder has brought to his time in the minors is a welcome Atlanta distraction. It is a reminder of just what Acuña means to this team on and off the field.

Even as Brian Snitker eases him back into the starting lineup, there is going to be a major impact. Simply having the pinch-hitting option of one of the most electric players in the game and his energy on the bench. Add in the team's improved ability to attack fastballs, and excitement for the 2023 MVP's return should be at a fever pitch.
