There is no shortage of blame to go around when it comes to Atlanta's dumpster fire of a start to the 2025 season. Atlanta's bullpen and offensive performance have been especially difficult to watch as the team has gotten off to a 1-8 start. One especially frustrating performer has been outfielder Jarred Kelenic. The outfielder's future was already in question heading into the season. The team easing Ronald Acuna Jr. back allowed for a second-chance, one Kelenic seems to be fumbling away.
If not for Jurickson Profar's suspension, it is easy to make the case that the outfielder would already be on the end of the bench or removed from the roster altogether. If the results don't change as the Braves host the Phillies this week, there is every reason to believe the team is going to look at another option.
Jarred Kelenic Making it Clear the Atlanta Braves Must Move On
Bryan De La Cruz and Alex Verdugo would give the Braves more offensive upside until Ronald Acuna Jr. is able to return. The recent addition of Stuart Fairchild takes away what value Kelenic had as a defensive replacement as well. This series should be the outfielder's final case as to whether or not he can remain a part of the starting lineup.
What makes Kelenic's start to the season so alarming isn't the low average or lack of power numbers. Often, these numbers can be misleading with the quality of at-bats not always matching up to the stats. Jarred Kelenic is simply an easy out at the plate right now, opposing pitchers have zero fear of attacking the hitter in a myriad of ways. Nearly half of Kelenic's plate appearances this season have ended with a strikeout.
When the ball is being put in play it is rarely hard contact, and the results are telling Atlanta they must find a replacement. For this to change, Kelenic needs a strong series against Atlanta's division rival that gives hope his bat is coming back to life. If not, the Braves would be wise to turn to Verdugo and De La Cruz as starters, with Fairchild as the defensive and base running replacement. This group could be improved ahead of the trade deadline and will get the ultimate boost with the return of Ronald Acuna Jr.
Jarred Kelenic appears to be on borrowed time holding onto his roster spot. Only a quick change in results should cause Atlanta to waver on what the outfield looks like moving forward.
