As the Atlanta Braves have continued to search for answers, there has been a level of aggressiveness when it comes to adding veteran pieces on minor league deals. Rowdy Tellez is one example of this, as the veteran spent time on the roster before being designated for assignment and then re-signed this past week on a minor league deal that maintains a bit of depth if Dominic Smith or Matt Olson were to suffer an injury at some point in the 2026 season.
This was followed by the release of Daysbel Hernandez and the Braves continuing to shuffle their bullpen. It is a never ending saga as the final two pieces in Atlanta's pen are a revolving door, as the franchise has consistently searched for a long-relief option. While there is no denying the stability at the back end of the bullpen, the Braves could use a bit more consistency from their final roster spots at the position.
It will be interesting to watch whether or not the Braves attempt to add to the position ahead of the trade deadline or simply opt to continue the team's recent roster shuffle. This time around, Owen Murphy and Connor Thomas were both given a chance to earn a spot in Atlanta's bullpen.
Braves Re-signing of Rowdy Tellez Adds Needed Veteran and Restarts Bullpen Shuffle
For Tellez, the veteran slugger is understandably accepting a limited role in hopes of joining the roster again at some point in the 2026 season. This is very much on the table when you consider how often the final bench spots have been shuffled this season. It points to a need both on the bench and in the bullpen to add a bit of depth and hopefully stop the recent run of struggles that date back to the start of June.
There simply is no getting around that this signing and the fallout moves around it point to a team searching for answers. Atlanta has gone from an undeniably dominating force to a team falling out of control of the division and appearing closer to last year's frustrating roster.
With this in mind, the Braves are wise to add the minor league depth but should be looking deeper to make needed improvements. A sense of contentment can no longer creep in based on the current division standings and the clear issues with the team's current roster. No question, these moves serve as a reminder of the job ahead of Atlanta's front office ahead of the 2026 trade deadline.
