It was clear the Atlanta Braves needed more offense from the catcher position after losses of Sean Murphy and Drake Baldwin to injuries forced Atlanta to utilize its fourth option. The team's third catcher (Jonah Heim) was traded earlier in the 2026 season ahead of Murphy's short-lived return. This explains why the team made a move earlier this week, bringing in Austin Wynns and designating Chadwick Tromp for assignment.
This is the part of the transaction that jumps out as a surprise, with veteran Sandy Leon offering hopeless offensive production. The aging catcher has 34 at-bats this season and has only managed a pair of hits and zero walks during this time. Leon is a frustrating mix of aggressive, while having very little ability to get the ball out of the infield. For Atlanta, it would've made far more sense to part ways with the piece that isn't offering anything at the plate.
Tromp has been limited as well, but did offer five hits in 25 plate appearances, far better production than what Leon has offered. For the Braves, it seems that what Leon offers behind the plate, as well as the production from a loaded lineup, is enough to keep the veteran rostered at least for a little while longer.
Braves Made Odd Catching Decision Amid Position's Offensive Woes
It is hard to complain about offensive production from the position when all the Braves do is continue to win series and roll through the National League. Having such a robust division lead gives the team a little bit more room to relax when it comes to positions struggling while awaiting returns from injury. As long as the winning continues, this attitude is understandable, even if Leon isn't deserving of a roster spot.
As harsh as this might seem, the catcher isn't hitting above .100 and has been as easy an out as you will see at this level. It is bringing back memories of the days of pitchers hitting, with many starters offering more of a fighting chance than what Leon is currently offering in Atlanta's lineup.
This continuing for much longer should lead the Braves to make another move at the position if Baldwin isn't able to quickly return. There simply is no defense for putting up with this lack of production, even if the veteran is a respected piece of the clubhouse. It will be interesting to watch how the next weeks are managed at a position that all of a sudden has grown very thin for Atlanta.
