The Atlanta Braves opted to part ways with José Azócar on Monday, with outfielder Stuart Fairchild ready to return.
The move doesn't come as a surprise with the former Met being brought in to serve in a depth role. Adding the outfielder was about finding an emergency answer in case of injury or to be used as a pinch-runner. This was the only action Azócar would see in his limited time in Atlanta. Fairchild offers more upside between the two options and was an obvious inclusion on the team's roster once healthy.
Fairchild is rarely given at-bats but used as a pinch runner and defensive replacement. With Eli White and Alex Verdugo both offering superior offensive production, this is an understandable move.
Even as the two veteran outfielders have taken a step back in recent weeks, both are still better options than putting Fairchild's limited offense in the lineup. The fact that this is even a debate speaks to the lack of depth added in the 2025 offseason. It also points to just how much blame Jurickson Profar has earned for the team's recent struggles.

Profar's selfish decision forced the Braves to turn to desperation depth options and ruined the biggest offseason addition. However, the outfielder is nearing a return as he is able to begin rehabbing and will aim to return to the Atlanta lineup at the end of the month. This should be a boost to an offense that consistently lacks energy.
For Fairchild, this isn't great news, with the team most likely parting ways with the outfielder when this does happen. Barring a trade, you have Verdugo and White, who both have far more offensive upside. The duo will likely be Atlanta's bench depth and primary pinch-hitting options. This means that Profar's return must demote either Fairchild or Luke Williams. Considering Williams is the team's backup infielder, it is going to be difficult to make a move there.
White has been working on the Atlanta infield some, but is far from a proven commodity if forced into action. There is also the ability that Williams brings to give needed days off. This leaves no path but to demote Fairchild when Profar is ready to return. With this in mind, Azócar's demotion simply sets the stage for Fairchild to soon follow the former Brave out the door.
