The Atlanta Braves have had a frustrating lack of stability at the shortstop position ever since Dansby Swanson's departure at the end of the 2022 season. With this in mind, the Braves went into this year adding Ha-Seong Kim, hoping to find a level of stable production. Instead, Kim's offensive performance imploded, and Atlanta has utilized a trio of Jim Jarvis, Jorge Mateo, and Mauricio Dubon to cover the position in hopes of finding a consistent source of offense.
Results have waned in recent weeks, making it clear that a blockbuster addition should be on the table. With this in mind, Houston Astros shortstop Jeremy Pena would be the perfect late season addition, offering the Braves a chance to find an answer that will last well beyond just the 2026 season.
Pena could be dealt, as the Astros have been an under .500 team for much of the season and are clearly in need of a reset. The shortstop only has one year of team control remaining, giving Atlanta plenty of time to work out an extension and make Pena one of the team's building blocks of the future.
The infielder is a consistent source of offense and has offered Houston a solid season, hitting .287 going into the weekend series and finding consistent ways to get on base and provide even an underwhelming Astros team a source of consistency.
Braves Should Attempt to Solve Shortstop Woes with Blockbuster Deal for Jeremy Pena
The questions holding back the deal are whether or not Houston is ready to enter a rebuild and how much the Braves are willing to spend. Adding Pena is unquestionably moving your chips to the center of the table and attempting to prevent the Los Angeles Dodgers from winning their third straight World Series title.
Adding Pena and an arm to the middle of the rotation goes a long way in erasing the team's biggest issues and puts the Braves firmly in the discussion as one of the league's top contenders. It would be a needed reset after the last month of struggles and would answer the biggest remaining offensive question mark.
For Pena, you've got a chance to leave a dynasty that appears to have reached its end and join an Atlanta roster built to win for years to come. It simply makes far too much sense not to explore in the next weeks of the season and hope that the Astros are willing to make the move.
