Braves should have zero interest in Marcell Ozuna reunion

TheAtlanta Braves have had a tendencyto reunite with former players who have reached a frustrating end with their new team. Jessie Chavez, Eddie Rosario, and Craig Kimbrel stand out as recent examples of players who reached the end of their careers and were given one last chance by the Braves. With this in mind, it doesn't come as a surprise that the Braves have been pointed to as a potential landing spot for the recently released Marcell Ozuna.

Ozuna has an impressive history with the Braves, going through two notable stretches of carrying the offense almost by himself. There is no doubt that the former Atlanta DH garners a lot of respect on the field for both the contributions he brought and the energy that was consistently infused in the clubhouse.

With that said, the current free agent should garner almost zero interest from the current front office. Ozuna simply doesn't have enough flexibility or offensive promise for the Braves to create a roster spot. Dominic Smith has been the better hitter in the 2026 season and is already a piece you don't want to put into the field.

Bringing in Ozuna would either force the Braves to carry two bench pieces you don't want to ever be forced to put into the field. This simply doesn't translate to winning baseball, making it clear that a reunion with the veteran simply doesn't make sense with the way that the roster is currently constructed.

Braves Must Avoid Tempting Reunion with Free Agent Marcell Ozuna

Ozuna has hovered around the Mendoza line and has struggled to be a capable option for the Pirates for much of the season. There simply isn't room to take on this potential liability in hopes of finding a surprise answer. If the franchise hadn't of added the right-handed hitting presence of Lane Thomas ahead of this past week's trade deadline, it might be a longer conversation.

Instead, there is a level of clarity that a reunion shouldn't be considered unless Ozuna is willing to accept a minor league assignment. If the slugger is willing to figure things out with Gwinnett, it at least opens the door to considering the move as injury insurance or a wildcard for the final month of the season.

This unlikely scenario is the only one in which the Braves should have any level of consideration when it comes to a reunion. Ozuna simply is far too limited and has proven to be a consistent liability offensively in the 2026 season.
