After an initial burst of production returning from the injured list last week, the Atlanta Braves have watched Ronald Acuna Jr. fall into a bit of a mini-slump. The outfielder has gone hitless in his last eight appearances at the plate and is 2/11 with four strikeouts in that span. While this isn't the production fans expect, there simply isn't any cause for concern. For Atlanta, it is simply a sign that a hot streak is incoming for one of the league's brightest talents.
While the season has been marred by injury, Acuna hasn't lived up to expectations when healthy, offering a .247 average and only a pair of home runs thus far. It isn't anything close to the MVP-level production Braves fans have come to expect, suggesting that a hot streak is inevitably around the corner. Acuna is a career .288 hitter offering more than 40 home runs the last time the right fielder appeared in more than 100 games.
This makes it clear that everything about the outfielder's history says that when he is healthy, the veteran is going to produce. It is a mindset fans should keep even in the middle of what is a frustrating stretch for a player expected to be capable of carrying the offense.
Braves Fans Shouldn't be Concerned About Ronald Acuna Jr.'s Regression
We are still at the end of May, with a long summer ahead, plenty of time for the 2023 MVP's bat to heat up with the weather and remind fans of his capability. The concern shouldn't be around the numbers or what might be ahead, but the star being able to stay on the field after missing large chunks of time each of the past two seasons.
Atlanta currently ranks second in runs per game, even without the outfielder putting up the expected production. This makes it fun to consider what might be ahead for the Braves when Acuna begins to put up the production he is capable of producing. It should push the Braves atop the leaderboard and cement the team as the lone clear threat to the Los Angeles Dodgers' attempt to win a third straight World Series.
With all of this in mind, Acuna's dip in production over the weekend is simply an outlier in what has been a stellar career when the star is on the field. As long as health continues to fall Atlanta's way, it is simply a matter of time until the power numbers shoot in the right direction and Auna reminds the league of exactly who he is.
