The cuts are coming fast and furious at Atlanta Braves camp. The Braves have already begun trimming their roster for Opening Day as they already sent down former-first round pick Hurston Waldrep and several bullpen arms in a slew of moves last week.
While the Braves have competition for the final two spots in the rotation and a couple of spots in the bullpen, the pitching staff has become clearer as Grapefruit League action is in full swing. With that in mind, the Braves made two more moves over the weekend and are trending quickly to finalizing their roster for the start of the season.
Chasen Shreve, Jordan Weems Optioned as Part of Braves Latest Roster Cuts
The Braves announced on Saturday that they have assigned Chasen Shreve and Jordan Weems to minor league camp. The moves bring the Braves down to 50 players at this stage of Spring Training and puts the bullpen into focus with just under a month left in Spring Training.

Shreve is a journeyman who started his career with Atlanta in 2014 and played for seven different teams before returning on a minor league deal last winter. The left-hander made just one outing for the Colorado Rockies last season and tossed three scoreless innings in two appearances this spring but couldn’t climb the team’s depth chart which includes southpaws Aaron Bummer, Dylan Lee and Angel Perdomo.
Weems also joined the Braves on a minor league deal last winter after going 1-1 with a 6.70 ERA with the Washington National last season. A five-year veteran, Weems pitched for three different teams before landing in Atlanta but couldn’t figure out his control, allowing three walks in two innings this spring.
While both moves are disappointing for the pitchers, it doesn’t change much in the current state of the Braves bullpen. Raisel Iglesias is still projected to be the Braves closer with Pierce Johnson, Daysbel Hernández as right handed options. Atlanta also brought in Buck Farmer as one of eight pitchers on a non-roster invite contract and Rule 5 pick Anderson Pilar is currently projected to serve in the long relief role.
The Braves will open the season when they travel to face the San Diego Padres on March 27.
