The Atlanta Braves' 2025 season of frustrations continued early in Thursday's first game of a doubleheader. Pitcher AJ Smith-Shawver appeared to be rebuilding confidence, throwing well aside from one regrettable pitch. The outing was cut short when Smith-Shawver was struck by a liner that would roll into the outfield for a base hit. The starter would wave off Brian Snitker and Atlanta's trainer, reassuring the coaching staff he was ready to go. However, on the very next batter, the pitcher would induce an F7 and grimace, looking to the Atlanta dugout for help.
Atlanta's dugout wasted no time pulling Smith-Shawver and bringing in Scott Blewett for an unplanned appearance. The liner appeared to go off Smith-Shawver's calf but was causing an obvious level of discomfort. Even in the midst of a doubleheader, the Braves made the right decision to pull the starter without hesitation.
AJ Smith-Shawver Exited What Was a Bounceback Start After Being Struck by a Liner
Third inning, Blewett replaced AJ Smith-Shawver, who got hit in the right calf by a Stott line drive. Trainers came out after initial incident, and AJSS tried to continue, got an F7 to wall. Pulled the plug at that point. AJSS can't catch a break with the injuries and such.

Blewett gave the Braves surprising length, getting the team deep into the ballgame after Smith-Shawver was pulled before pitching three innings. It is a concerning injury for a team that was finally benefitting from a fully healthy roster. Only the suspended Jurickson Profar is a notable contributor still missing from the Atlanta roster.
Hopefully, it proves to be an injury that is easily addressed with Smith-Shawver badly needed in Atlanta's rotation. If an injured list stint is required, the team would likely turn to Bryce Elder, who was throwing the ball well before being demoted to make room for Spencer Strider's return.
It is yet another example of a 2025 season that has felt cursed for the Braves. Starting with a 0-7 record, the Braves set the tone early for what has been consistent injuries and frustrations. Losing Smith-Shawver in the first game of a doubleheader is as brutal of a start as you can write. However, at least the Atlanta offense was brought to life, and Blewett showed the ability to eat innings at a capable level.
Atlanta will keep a close eye on the standout rookie, hoping that missing a turn in the rotation isn't necessary with the starter's recent dominance. It's a story to keep a close eye on as a season of frustration continues.
