The AtlantaBraves opted to part ways with infielder Jorge Mateothis past week as fallout from the team's trade deadline decisions has continued. Atlanta didn't have enough roster spots to keep Jim Jarvis and Mateo both rostered with Ha-Seong Kim's return from injury. Rather than admit defeat with Kim, the Braves opted to part ways with the far more valuable Mateo and sent a dangerous message in doing so. Since returning from injury, Kim has been given two at-bats and gone hitless in both appearances.
It is a familiar theme for a player who offers far less value as a contributor than Mateo. While this historically might not be the case, both players are on expiring deals and have had equal opportunity to make a positive impact. Mateo has unquestionably been the better option even as the offense has faded over the last two months.
The experienced infielder offers the Braves speed off the bench and a strong glove that can be plugged in at a number of positions. Atlanta chose to keep the more expensive player rostered rather than admit defeat on a failed signing and keep a player that clearly brought energy to the clubhouse and a spark that could've proven to be a valued piece in a potential postseason run.
Braves Mismanaged Decision to Replace Jorge Mateo with Ha-Seong Kim
In the postseason, when the margin for error is so incredibly thin, the difference in having a runner capable of swiping an extra base or utilizing his speed to get to the ball in the hole is huge. Mateo may no longer be putting up great offensive numbers, but it is still more than Kim has offered the entire 2026 season, and yet the Braves had no problem turning the page in favor of the more expensive player.
This goes against the message that manager Walt Weiss has been sending all season, managing players by performance and not by salary. Jarvis remaining in the starting lineup so often or the management of Mauricio Dubon have served as examples of a decision-maker focused on giving his club the best chance to win each and every night.
It has been a welcome change and one that the team's front office should be getting in line with instead of working against. Opting to jettison Mateo was an undeniable misstep and one that could cost the Braves unless Kim is able to find a way to turn the corner.
