The Atlanta Braves need to make the obvious decision to sell at the upcoming trade deadline. There simply isn't any reason left for hope that this season will be anything but the dumpster fire it clearly is.
Sitting double-digit games below .500 and behind the Miami Marlins in the division and wildcard race are the best examples of what this season has become. It is impossible to believe that this level of regression and underachieving was possible, and yet here we are. Atlanta needs to understand the position they are in and look to move on from expiring contracts and veteran pieces.
Included in this is former Atlanta closer Raisel Iglesias, who carries limited value. A season ago, the closer would have been the top option on the trade market and brought back a wealth of a package in return. However, true to the theme of 2025, the veteran reliever has watched his production fall off a cliff. If you're looking for one big reason the Braves first started this slide, it is the closer's inability to keep a lead in a close game within reach.
Braves Must Trade Raisel Iglesias
Despite this, there have been recent signs of life from the veteran that offer at least some value. The Braves shouldn't have a problem moving on from the veteran if their expectations are realistic of what they will get in return. Iglesias isn't going to garner a top prospect or even an impact player in return. Atlanta must understand that it needs to look to add a bench piece or a project player. This is all the franchise can expect from Iglesias, who has only weeks of team control remaining.
Adding in the struggles Iglesias has shown throughout the season, it is easy to see why a return is going to be very limited. Still, the Braves need to turn the page on the veteran and give the position a fresh start for next season. Iglesias is already going to be a free agent, and there is little reason for the Braves to consider his return.
Opting to go ahead and trade the veteran reliever well ahead of the deadline might be the wisest move the team can make. No question, it is time for a fresh start and for Iglesias to find a new landing spot with a contender looking to buy low on a potential high-leverage option.
