The return of Ronald Acuña Jr. appears to have put Eli White in the most precarious position of Atlanta's current outfield options. It certainly didn't help matters that White had one of the worst base-running blunders in recent franchise history. However, there is still plenty of time for White to maintain his incredible start and force his way back into Atlanta's lineup before the return of a suspended Jurickson Profar.
Profar's eventual return put Eli White on a clear timetable to work his way back into Atlanta's plans. It is clear the team favors Alex Verdugo, putting White into the lineup only against lefty options. This is going to limit at-bats for a player who had won an everyday spot. However, White will be getting additional infield work perhaps opening an avenue for the veteran to have another avenue to work his way into the lineup.
Eli White's Roster Spot Will Be Consistently in Question Throughout the 2025 Season
White is at a disadvantage of not having the careers of Profar or Verdugo. The consistent offensive numbers haven't been there, and because of that, there is going to be far less margin for error. The outfielder is going to need strong offensive moments that make it impossible for the team to put the veteran on the bench the next night.
This is obviously far easier said than done for a veteran who is already showing signs of fading offensively. However, this is the only path White has to maintain a meaningful role when Jurickson Profar returns. You aren't going to take Michael Harris out of the lineup, and Verdugo appears to have a strong grip on the fourth outfielder role.
White can still stick on the roster, replacing Stuart Fairchild as the backup defender and pinch runner. However, this is a huge step back for a player who has consistently been a bright spot for the Braves in the first two months of the season. The harsh reality of the business is still going to catch up.
Bringing us to the most likely path the Braves are going to choose when Profar is able to return. It makes sense to sell high on Eli White in an attempt to improve the Atlanta bullpen. Putting the outfielder in a trade deadline deal, allowing Verdugo and Fairchild to serve as your outfield depth.
This appears to be the most likely way White's time in Atlanta is going to end. Barring the outfielder showing his value as a utility option, it makes the most sense for the franchise and helps clarify a crowded position.
