The Atlanta Braves' hiring of Fredi Gonzalez should serve as a warning to the rest of the Atlanta roster. Current levels of failure aren't going to be accepted and will demand some tough changes. It is fair to wonder if this is going to include star players who aren't performing up to lofty expectations. This includes current starting catcher Sean Murphy. After a strong start at the plate, the catcher's offensive production has faded. This dates back to the 2024 season when Murphy's performance was far below expectations.

It is only fair to point out that Drake Baldwin has been incredibly consistent and is making it difficult for the team to continue to start Murphy. If the current level of struggles continues, the team is going to need to give Baldwin the bulk of the start and perhaps even explore trading the star catcher. It is clear that the team's current core isn't working, and it is demanding that the team explore all possible avenues of improvement.

Braves Catcher Sean Murphy Should Take Note of Team's Latest Changes

It doesn't help matters that the Braves made the mistake of trading William Contreras to help make room for Sean Murphy. This is a lineup that would unquestionably benefit from the consistent offense Contreras has offered the Brewers' lineup since leaving Atlanta. This is one of a few clear mistakes you can point to squarely on the shoulders of the current Atlanta front office.

Still, there is no reversing the pass, and the future is exciting with Drake Baldwin being a consistent force. If Murphy's struggles do continue, the team is going to have to seriously consider making a change. The change on the coaching staff and bringing back Fredi Gonzalez sends a strong message that the failure is being noticed and won't be tolerated.

If things don't change ahead of this season's trade deadline, the team would be wise to consider pivoting away from veteran players and attempting a reset. After three straight seasons of first-round playoff exits, it isn't as if you'd be breaking up an exciting young core. While there are star pieces you can't consider touching, Sean Murphy isn't among them. The veteran catcher should consider himself put on notice.
