The Atlanta Braves have been forced to test their depth at the catcher position due to injuries to both Sean Murphy and Drake Baldwin. Losing Baldwin has clearly hurt Atlanta's lineup, while Murphy has continued to be mired in offensive frustrations and unable to stay on the field. This led to veteran catcher Sandy Leon earning an opportunity and appearing to be a great option, picking up a pair of hits in his first five at-bats.

However, in the days since Leon has fallen apart offensively, becoming the only sure out in the Braves lineup. Leon is hitting .080 and is 2/25 this season, being a complete frustration offensively for Atlanta. Even as accomplished and respected of a veteran as Leon is, the franchise is going to have no choice but to turn the page on Leon if things don't quickly turn.

Chadwick Tromp has offered far more consistency offensively while still having limited upside. With this in mind, it wouldn't be a surprise to see Leon jettisoned even before the position returns to full health. For a team fighting for the league's best record, it simply isn't acceptable to have Leon playing a meaningful role and offering so little offensively.

Braves Must Part Ways with Sandy Leon as Veteran's Offensive Woes Continue

Cutting Leon wouldn't be a surprise with the franchise having minor league options capable of surpassing the current production. The only reason the trigger likely hasn't already been pulled is the respect that Leon garners. The veteran catcher is a World Series champion, being an important piece of the 2018 Boston Red Sox roster. Add in Leon's long resume of working with a number of accomplished starters, and it is understandable that the Braves have given the backstop a bit of grace.

Still, there is no denying that the level of production cannot be tolerated with Leon as an offensive liability. If Baldwin isn't going to be back on the active roster quickly, Atlanta would be wise to sign another option or utilize one of their current minor league depth pieces, parting ways with the struggling Leon.

While Jonah Heim was a solid backup option, the Braves dealt the catcher away when Murphy returned to the active roster ahead of yet another injury. This has left Atlanta with extremely limited options after losing Baldwin. Still, the franchise cannot tolerate the level of slump Leon is in, understanding it would be impossible not to find an upgrade.
