Things grew so dark for Marcell Ozuna that the Atlanta Braves lacked a qualified offer to move on from his expiring contract at the trade deadline. Atlanta's front office made it clear they were willing to listen to offers for the struggling veteran and closer Raisel Iglesias. However, neither player was going to be given away, and Ozuna's performance made it impossible to find such a deal. Those results have taken a drastic turn over a long weekend series against the Miami Marlins.

Ozuna is putting up great numbers while reminding Braves fans of just how impactful he can be when healthy. There is an assumption that the hip injury Ozuna suffered early in the year was the reason for the drop in offense. Considering just how bad things got, it is more than fair to suspect the injury is a major factor.

Now, with the slugger again showing his capability, fans and pundits can't help to wonder what the future might hold. When Ozuna was imploding, turning the page and keeping Sean Murphy and Drake Baldwin in the lineup seemed the foregone conclusion. The recent surge has left reason to wonder if this is still the wisest path.

The Braves Have a Tough Offseason Decision Looming with Marcell Ozuna

The Braves have what appears to be the best catching duo in the league and could utilize this to fix another position. Ozuna's market isn't likely to be out of Atlanta's comfort zone and based on his age. If Atlanta chooses this path, Murphy could be dealt to fix another issue while giving Baldwin full catching duties. No matter what path they choose, this roster isn't just one move away from being a contender.

Both the bullpen and lineup need major attention in the offseason. If Ozuna is able to be the player he was at the start of the season and over the last week, a reunion must be considered. Re-signing the veteran now is at least a consideration if the current production continues.

It serves as a reminder of why the Braves' offense has been so inconsistent with so many underachieving pieces. Aside from Ozuna, Michael Harris and Ozzie Albies have both faced major struggles as well. Leaving reason to wonder if returning the current core and attempting to build around it is the better choice.

How the season finishes for Albies and Ozuna will be especially impactful in answering this question. Leaving at least one interesting storyline to watch in what is a lost season.
