The Atlanta Braves made room for Jurickson Profar by parting ways with veteran outfielder Alex Verdugo. While Stuart Fairchild was expected to be demoted, the change happened due to Verdugo's offense completely imploding. It is hard to argue for keeping Verdugo on the roster when at least Fairchild can offer the same level of offense while being a far superior defender and pinch-running option. Verdugo's defense is below average, and the outfielder isn't winning a lot of foot races. The reason why he was on the roster in the first place was to bolster the offense.

With this in mind, it was the right decision and serves as a wake-up call to another veteran outfielder. Eli White had an incredible start to the 2025 season before cooling off considerably over the last few weeks of the season. White is somewhat protected by the fact he is a viable pinch-running option and a superior defender. Still, the fact the Braves were so easily willing to pivot away from Verdugo suggests they would be willing to take the same path with White if the production doesn't improve.

Braves Outfielder Eli White Must Take Notice of Recent Demotion

Parting ways with Verdugo is far easier as well due to the return of Profar. Having Atlanta's starting outfield locked in with no changes expected barring an injury. It is would be extremely difficult for both White and Verdugo to find ways into the lineup unless it is a pinch-hit appearance. This is where White must continue to prove his value if he doesn't want to follow in the same path as the recently demoted Verdugo.

The veteran needs to continue to play above-average defense and work to establish himself as a reliable pinch-running option. If this happens, the offense doesn't have to be overwhelming to continue to earn his roster spot.

Regardless, it is a demotion that reminds fans and the clubhouse alike as to where this season is going. We are heading in a direction that is going to leave the Atlanta front office with little reason not to part ways with White and every other short-term answer in favor of giving younger players a chance. It is something the outfielder must keep in mind as the 2025 season continues to circle the drain.
