The Atlanta Braves' up-and-down tenure with Bryce Elder in the rotation continued in the second half, with the veteran making his first start since the All-Star Break to begin this week's series against the San Diego Padres. Elder pitched six strong innings, giving up only two earned runs, and appeared to be the best version of himself. This is after having an ERA of 8.10 in the month of June and appearing to be a liability on the mound. The first two months of the season, Elder was a calming presence and able to eat innings with regularity.
This version of the right-hander was back on the mound for Monday's start and left hope that the franchise can still lean on the starter moving forward. Subtracting Elder from the rotation would put the Braves in an undeniable bind, as they currently lack the needed depth to overcome a struggling starter or another meaningful injury.
Elder being able to stabilize the rotation by taking the mound and offering six quality innings was a step in the right direction, and Braves fans' hope is a sign of things to come. For Atlanta to hold onto the National League East lead, it is going to require Elder sticking in the rotation and being this version of himself in the final two months of the year.

If the postseason were to start today, it is fair to point to Chris Sale as the only Atlanta arm the franchise can count on to make consistent starts. Whether or not Elder is going to factor into the postseason, this makes it clear that the lack of consistency heightens expectations and pressure on Elder moving deeper into the year.
For Elder, it is a unique opportunity after appearing to play his way out of the team's plans a year ago. A strong finish to the 2025 season and a great start this year have altered this and given Elder the chance to once again cement his spot in the rotation and be a much-needed stabilizing force.
With that said, there is zero debate that the Braves should remain active ahead of this year's trade deadline. The team needs to be actively searching for answers that could help win a postseason series and be a clear innings eater behind Sale. A position that fans hope Elder can win, turning back the clock to the player he was in the first two months of the 2026 season.
