The perfect illustration of just how inconsistent the Atlanta Braves 2025 bullpen has been requires rewinding just a bit. Turning back the clock to the Opening Week series and remembering current free agent Hector Neris was brought out in a high-leverage situation. With the game on the line, manager Brian Snitker didn't see a better option than the unproven Neris. While the veteran has had hot streaks in the past, there was nothing in recent memory that demanded Neris have a chance at a setup role. When the veteran imploded and cost the franchise a game, the Braves were quick to release the struggling reliever.

It didn't come as a surprise when the Los Angeles Angels pounced on the chance to add another former Brave. The franchise has a long list of recent additions that have spent time in Atlanta. Neris would join this group and perform to the exact same low standard he set in Atlanta. It isn't shocking to see Neris struggle with the one impressive run in the veteran's career being the clear outlier. The Angels had no choice but to take the same path Atlanta chose early in the season.

Former Braves Reliever Hector Neris Set to Hit Free Agency

Neris is now a free agent and will have a chance to join a third team in the 2025 season. It wouldn't be shocking to see this chance earned based on the desperation throughout the league to find capable relief options. The promise of the one great run the reliever had in Houston is enough to keep earning the veteran chances for a while longer.

For the Braves, this serves as a reminder of a cheap front office that refused to fix the bullpen. While injuries and the offensive regression are out of the team's control, there is no denying the moves needed to win this season simply weren't made. Snitker having to call on Neris in a high-leverage situation serves as clear evidence of this in the first week of the season.

Atlanta's bullpen remains a concern despite it not being the biggest factor in the team's latest slide. Even with the team's desperation for answers, Neris isn't going to be brought back anytime soon with the short tenure at the start of the season more than enough to end the reliever's time in Atlanta. Still, it would be surprising not to see his career continue with a team looking to turn back the clock.
