The Atlanta Falcons have made it clear with their offseason decisions that it is Tua Tagovailoa favored in the upcoming quarterback competition. It makes a certain level of sense when you look at the quarterback's experience and the fact that each of the last two seasons the offense has been begging for Penix to step in and make a clear statement. Penix did just enough to stay in the lineup prior to injury, but was far from a convincing franchise quarterback, lacking consistency.

With that said, the door is once again open for the quarterback with Tagovailoa missing the early part of camp due to a back injury. Penix is facing injury concerns of his own, but the door is undeniably open for the younger quarterback to step in and take the lead in a competition that really is lacking in excitement as Falcons fans attempt to talk themselves into either potential starter.

The advantage that Penix presents is the hope that there is continued development with the quarterback having the arm to make all the needed throws. The quarterback has the skill set; the issue has been consistent accuracy and whether or not he can stay on the field.

Concerns Penix now has a chance to answer as the franchise works to get Tagovailoa back, and Penix could prove himself healthy and take the lead in the quarterback competition. It is easy to argue that this is what would be best for the franchise.

Falcons Giving Michael Penix Clear Opportunity Amid Tua Tagovailoa Concerns

Back injuries are often inexact, and whether it is going to continue to be an issue or an early camp story that is quickly forgotten is an unknown. Tagovailoa being favored in the competition is understandable when you look at the last two years and the struggles of Kirk Cousins and the inability of Penix to take advantage of this.

Still, if the Falcons are going to find a long term answer at the position, the most likely path remains Penix taking a leap and becoming a viable starting option. Tagovailoa following in the path of Baker Mayfield or Sam Darnold and breathing life back into his career after being kicked to the curb is possible but unlikely.

Fans cannot help but to hope that Penix is able to take advantage of the chance that lies in front of him and can build momentum and make this a real competition. One that gives the younger quarterback a chance to play his way into the starting lineup and erase the clear lead that Tagovailoa had coming into camp.
