With the Atlanta Falcons facing an uncertain future with Michael Penix Jr., it was clear the franchise needed to make a move at the position. Penix is coming off a serious ACL injury that sidelined him for the conclusion of the 2025 season and has put his future in question.
Atlanta's answer needed to be a steadying veteran or a prospect that fans could put their arms around. Instead, the Falcons added former Miami Dolphins starter Tua Tagovailoa with the expectation that the experienced starter could be a potential answer to begin the 2026 season.
It is difficult not to see the issue with adding Tagovailoa, given his durability concerns, after having missed extensive time due to concussions. Not only has the quarterback struggled to stay healthy, but there have been turnover issues over the last three seasons, with 36 interceptions and 22 fumbles. The Falcons are hardly adding a reliable option and have set themselves up for another season of frustration at the position.
Ever since Matt Ryan's 2022 exit, the franchise has been through a revolving door of potential answers, with Marcus Mariota, Desmond Ridder, Taylor Heinicke, Kirk Cousins, and Michael Penix Jr. all having their turn to be the answer. Tua is simply the latest and appears likely to end in similar frustration following an up-and-down career in Miami.
Falcons Have Set Themselves up for Failure Adding Tua Tagovailoa as Starting Answer
In fairness, it should be noted that Tua has previously been a productive starter, passing for 4,624 yards and 29 touchdowns in the 2023 season, helping keep the Dolphins relevant in the playoff picture. Still, this is the outlier among the rest of the quarterback's career, which is largely known for his consistent injuries and frustrating performances more than any success on the field.
Atlanta's best hope of finding an answer at the position remains Penix finding a way to get healthy ahead of the season and finally taking the next step forward as a franchise quarterback. However, it seems more likely that Penix will be eased back into action, and the Falcons will turn to Tagovailoa as a potential answer to begin the 2026 season.
If this is the case, fans are going to be holding their breath on every hit and throw, understanding the injury and turnover risk that makes this move such a volatile decision. It is fair to wonder why the Falcons would add a clear risk when understanding Penix's injury history and the question mark the quarterback remains.
The Falcons would be wise to seek out a reliable third option behind Penix and Tua in hopes of finding another legitimate starting option, if needed. Trevor Siemian is the team's current third option and offers the franchise a clear chance to find an upgrade, knowing how possible it is that the team's third option could be called into action at some point by Kevin Stefanski.
