Falcons have a running back competition on their hands

The Atlanta Falcons are getting to the point where they're seriously going to have to look at their roster and make some tough decisions. Those decisions didn't get any easier after the team dominated in its second preseason game against the Indianapolis Colts.

It was a game in which the starters didn't take the field, and it was up to the reserves and players fighting for a roster spot to show up. That's what they did, and the running back position may have been one of the areas where things went really well. Tyler Goodson got the start for the Falcons in the backfield, and he finished the day with 59 yards, which included a 49-yard touchdown run that sent the sidelines into a blaze.

After that, it was Nate Carter and Cash Jones' turn to prove what they could do, and they weresuccessful in their plans. Carter finished with 42 yards and a touchdown, and Jones finished with 41 yards on the ground and a team-high 62 receiving yards, plus a touchdown.

The Falcons have good problems at running back

It was good that the backfield was able to perform at a high level, but it poses a problem for the Falcons in the next two weeks. They already have Bijan Robinson and Brian Robinson Jr., who will be taking most of the snaps this season, which means there isn't enough space for everybody on the team. There's a good chance that the team keeps four running backs on the roster, and that leaves someone on the outside looking in.

Jones has shown that he can turn opportunities to gold in the backfield and as a receiver, and that's very valuable in an offense. Add to that the fact that Jones is also solid on special teams, and his roster spot might be locked up more than ever, especially after his performance against the Colts.

Who will take the final spot on the roster?

That leaves Goodson and Carter remaining, and it could be hard to decide who to choose between the two. Goodson has value on the team outside of being a running back, as he'll have a chance at returning kicks. He's already shown that he has the speed to get from one end to the other, and the Falcons could make him the fourth running back on the roster.

Carter had the most rush attempts on the team against the Colts, and they didn't mind putting the ball in his hands. In the end, Carter could be the odd man out, but they could still find a spot for him on the practice squad.

These next two weeks will be important for the running backs as they try to land a roster spot, and it'll be interesting to see who steps up when their number is called.
