Kaleb McGary was heading into potentially his final season in Atlanta. That was before some final negotiations took place between the front office and the career Falcon on Tuesday afternoon.
News broke Tuesday from Falcons’ camp that McGary has agreed to a two-year contract extension to remain with the only franchise that he’s ever known through the 2027 season.

Kaleb McGary Sticks with the Falcons
Hailing from the University of Washington, McGary was originally selected by the Falcons in the first round (31st overall) of the 2019 NFL Draft. Since then, he has become a mainstay at right tackle for the Birds, starting 92 of 100 regular-season games.
It seemed somewhat doubtful that McGary would remain in Atlanta beyond the upcoming season after a deal was not agreed upon this past offseason, but that is not a concern any longer. The total value of the extension is reported to be $30 million per McGary’s agent Collin Roberts.
Proven Protection for Michael Penix
As most know, the Falcons turned to then-rookie QB Michael Penix Jr. as the starter under center for the final three games of last season. That instantly placed even more importance on McGary’s role at right tackle.
Typically, the left-tackle spot is the most crucial in pass protection, as that position blocks the so-called “blindside” for a right-handed quarterback. With Penix being a lefty, the right tackle assumes that role.
In the three starts Penix made down the stretch last season, he was sacked just three times while attempting a combined total of 100 passes. Continuing to keep the young gunslinger on his feet like that will be crucial for the Falcons’ offense.
McGary proved he could do that.

In addition, maintaining the continuity between McGary and long-time offensive-line mates such as LT Jake Matthews and RG Chris Lindstrom will be another key factor for the Falcons.
Penix will only benefit from having such a tight-knit group of experienced blockers in front of him. The Falcons’ front office has shown its commitment to his success.
