Falcons must make obvious Jack Strand decision after preseason breakout

After a dismal Week 1 of preseasonaction, the Atlanta Falcons optedto bench Tua Tagovailoa, limiting the starter to camp work while Michael Penix Jr. remained sidelined working his way back from last season's injury. This left Cooper Rush and Jack Strand handling all snaps for the Falcons and set up what was an undeniable breakout performance for the undrafted rookie. Strand finished 12/17 for 212 yards, handing the Falcons a passing touchdown as well as a rushing score.

It was as dominating a performance as fans will see in preseason action, offering hope that the Falcons have discovered an overlooked talent. After last week's frustrating preseason debut, it was a needed positive story for a franchise that has spent far too much of the last five seasons making mistakes at the position. With this in mind, Strand should be included on Atlanta's active roster with zero chance of the signal caller being slipped onto the practice squad.

This type of preseason performance is one that makes it clear that any move to the practice squad is likely setting up another team to steal the project quarterback. Strand is clearly still going to need time to develop, but is one of the more exciting young pieces the franchise has added to the position in recent memory.

Strand is simply too important to Atlanta after this impressive run to allow the rookie to walk away. Both Tagovailoa and Penix have been incredibly injury-prone throughout their respective careers. Neither player has offered a consistent level of play, either putting it very much on the table that Strand could become a viable starting option at some point in the 2026 season.

With this in mind, as difficult as it might be to sacrifice the roster spot when decisions are already incredibly difficult, the Falcons must make the right decision and not allow Strand the possibility of being signed away.

Strand showed on Saturday night that he can make every needed throw, with the question being whether the Falcons can develop his decision-making and speed up this ability. No matter the answer, with the current state of Atlanta's quarterback room, it is well worth taking up the roster spot to find out.

Not only is Strand impressive as a passer, but showed off his ability to create with his legs when a play breaks down. No question, the Falcons have no choice but to keep Strand on an active roster spot.
