The Atlanta Falcons have scared pundits away from picking the franchise to take a meaningful step forward after an epic 2024 collapse. It is hard to blame anyone from shying away from picking Atlanta with how things ended. Simply glancing at the stat sheet, Michael Penix Jr. is 1-2 in his career, and the numbers aren't jumping off the page.
However, Falcons fans know exactly what they have in the future star and understand where things are heading. Still, there are improvements that could be made heading into a pivotal 2025 season.
One that stands out is the receiver position after Darnell Mooney suffered a camp injury. No matter how long Mooney stands to miss, it reminded fans how little depth is behind the three starters. Atlanta signed D.J. Chark as potential depth, but there are far superior options still remaining. Keenan Allen should be at the top of this list, having a solid 2024 season with the Chicago Bears. Signing Allen takes the pressure off questionable depth and adds yet another weapon for your young quarterback.
The Falcons Should Consider Signing Keenan Allen
Mooney is still the second option, and his return is vital to the Atlanta offense. Signing Allen is about allowing Ray-Ray McCloud to play in a utility role, focusing on returning kicks and rotating into the offense to give the starting trio breaks. Along with Bijan Robinson, Tyler Allgeier, and Kyle Pitts, this hands Atlanta's young quarterback an incredibly diverse group of weapons. With Penix's arm and Zac Robinson's creativity, expectations would be incredibly high.
Allen is the final piece that brings both experience and needed depth to complete the offense. It shows a level of belief in your quarterback and completes an offense capable of making a playoff run. With this in mind, the Falcons should at least reach out to the veteran and see if there is a possible signing.
While the Falcons do have limited cap space due to Kirk Cousins, Atlanta can make enough room for 1-2 impact veterans. Allen isn't someone looking for a long-term deal but likely would sign a one-year bargain deal in an effort to push the Falcons over the top.
