A dominating defensive performance played a big part in the Atlanta Falcons' 22-6 win over the Minnesota Vikings, especially when it came to a stifling pass rush. For the first time in nearly a decade, there is reason to believe that the Falcons have truly put together a capable pass rush. The success is putting pressure on defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich, who has a great problem heading into Week 3 of attempting to rotate an incredibly productive group of pass rushers.
Rookie James Pearce Jr. is a part of the unit, but he only played 17 snaps in Week 2, which was the fewest among Atlanta pass rushers. Still, Pearce managed to get to the quarterback in the game along with fellow rookie Jalon Walker, with both players flashing some potential. Now, Ulbrich must reward the rookie with more playing time in Week 3.
Falcons DC Jeff Ulbrich Must Give James Pearce Jr. More Playing Time in Week 3
It seems the most likely reasoning for Pearce playing so few snaps is in an effort to keep the young disruptor fresh heading down the stretch of the 2025 season. He doesn't boast a huge frame and is going to be needed when the games matter most. Still, Ulbrich must weigh this against giving Pearce needed reps in a new defensive system as the Falcons attempt to continue their pass-rushing momentum.
After all, the first-year pro currently owns the 42nd-best Pro Football Focus pass rush grade (66.6) among 98 eligible exterior defenders.
Pearce is far from alone when it comes to big defensive plays along the line from Sunday. Zach Harrison, Jalon Walker, Leonard Floyd, and Brandon Dorlus are all making big plays. It's the most productive that Atlanta's pass rush has looked in a long time.
Pearce is playing a considerable role in the early success and has more than earned a boost in Week 3 snaps based on his performance. With the success that rookie defensive backs Xavier Watts and Billy Bowman are having, too, there are plenty of reasons for the Falcons to highlight their youth.
Ulbrich did have some great moments as the New York Jets' defensive coordinator, with the unit taking a clear step back after his departure. The Falcons have brought in the needed leadership and are already seeing results in the first two weeks of the season. Still, not every decision the coach has made has been perfect, including a clear need for Pearce to play more often going forward.
