The Atlanta Falcons are a perfect 2-0 since getting Michael Penix Jr. back in the lineup and the offense has been a level of explosive fans haven't seen since Matt Ryan's 2016 MVP season. It is very important to note that in no way is this to compare Penix to Ryan, as the quarterback remains inconsistent in a handful of areas and has clear room to develop. However, the capability and ceiling are beyond clear and have resulted in the Falcons going on an impressive offensive run.
It is fun to consider what exactly the Falcons might be capable of accomplishing once Penix is fully comfortable and continues his development. One of the issues the broadcast called out was the ability to put touch on what were layup passes and this has been a notable struggle at times for Penix.
However, the positives far outweigh any concerns as the Falcons are scoring at a level fans haven't seen in over a decade. As long as the results continue it is scary to consider what could be accomplished as the offense settles in over the next month. No question, Penix is doing his part to end any speculation that the Falcons need to make a change at the position.
There was room to wonder whether Tua Tagovailoa would be the team's starter heading into the year. An injury ended this speculation and left the Falcons forced to endure Cooper Rush and Jack Strand in the first two games of the season. Now, not only is there a deeper appreciation for Penix, but one that points to an incredibly bright future.
Falcons Fans Can't Help but Wonder what Offensive Ceiling Might be as Penix Continues to Settle in
Through two games this season Penix has 479 passing yards and a pair of touchdowns to go along with a lone interception. What has made the performance so fun to watch is how much the quarterback has unlocked Bijan Robinson. Seeing the talented back explode consistently due simply to having a capable quarterback serves as a reminder of an elite talent that hasn't been given a deserved stage.
Penix has gone a long way already in handing the Falcons one of the league's best offensive units and this is simply scratching the surface of what the quarterback might accomplish. The fact there are clear improvements and another level to be found should terrify the rest of the NFC South.
Even if Penix doesn't take the expected leap there is zero doubt that as long as Penix is playing at his current level the division should be Atlanta's to lose.
