The Atlanta Falconsnamed a starting quarterbackat the beginning of the week, but that will not be the person on the field in Week 1 against the Pittsburgh Steelers. After Tua Tagovailoawent down with an oblique injuryin practice and Cooper Rush started taking first-team reps, it was obvious that the Falcons would have to consider making a quarterback change before Sunday.
That's what they did on the final day of practice before heading to Pittsburgh, and Rush will be in control of the offense. There's no telling the severity of Tagovailoa's injury, but he's currently considered week-to-week.
Falcons' quarterback room is shaky and injured
In the grand scheme of things, the way the quarterback room has shaped up for the Falcons before the start of the season should not come as much of a surprise. When the Falcons signed Tagovailoa early in the offseason, they knew that he had a history of injuries throughout recent years of his career. Over the past two months, Tagovailoa has already been injured twice before stepping on the field.
On the other hand, the Falcons still have Michael Penix Jr., who's been working back from his own injury from last season. Penix also has a history of injuries, but the Falcons were giving him as much time as he needed to recover. He was cleared for 11-on-11s last week, but in the end, he still didn't feel like he was ready to step on the field for the Falcons, even though he says he's real close.
Going into Week 1, the top two quarterbacks for the Falcons are injured, which is not ideal. It could've been something that they were prepping for since they kept four quarterbacks on the roster. At the same time, nobody would think that two quarterbacks would be injured this early in the season, but things like this happen, especially when they have a long injury history.
Questions will continue on the future of the QB position
There's a chance that Penix could return before Tagovailoa, and that probably wouldn't bother the Falcons. When looking at what he brings to the field, he could make more of an impact than Tagovailoa, but everything is unknown with both of them on the shelf. At least with Tagovailoa, they saw during the preseason what he can do when he's under center, and that was enough for them to make him the starter.
Now, while both quarterbacks are on the shelf, Rush will do what he's done over the past few years of his career, and that's come in while the starting quarterback is injured. There's no telling how long he'll hold the job, but that's been the story of the Falcons for the past few seasons. Nobody knows what the quarterback position will look like.
