The Atlanta Falcons are into the second week of OTAs with an impressive rookie class continuing to demand headlines. While Kirk Cousins continues to be an unwanted distraction, the Falcons still have every reason for excitement about the team's new additions. This includes first-round selection Jalon Walker, who has wasted zero time making an impression. Atlanta head coach Raheem Morris offered that the defender is like "Instant grits." This in reference to Walker's ability to instantly master whatever coaching point the team is focusing on.
Considering that Walker spent so much time under Georgia Bulldogs head coach Kirby Smart, this doesn't come as a surprise. If you're going to be in the middle of Smart's defense, you must be incredibly sharp. The coach has consistently run one of the best defensive units in college football for the last four years. Earning a large role within this defense requires the type of ability Morris is now being impressed by.
Jalon Walker is Impressing Atlanta Falcons Head Coach Raheem Morris with His Ability
What makes Walker's first season in Atlanta so interesting is how the franchise plans to use the Georgia product. Defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich has made it clear that on the first two downs, they will utilize the defender's ability as a pass rusher. Having the linebacker consistently coming off the edge before entertaining using his abilities in run support and coverage.
Considering Atlanta's past struggles rushing the passer, this approach makes sense. However, it is going to be difficult to keep Walker's speed from the middle of the Atlanta defense. The linebacker can cover sideline-to-sideline with surprising ease and would improve the team's coverage ability. Still, the team's current approach makes sense when you consider the more pressing need to improve Atlanta's 2025 pass rush.
Raheem Morris praising Walker so early in the offseason should serve as hope that the draft pick will do just that. Along with fellow rookie James Pearce Jr. and free agent signing Leonard Floyd, the Falcons are in a position to have a capable pass rush for the first time in over half a decade. This gives all the more reason for Atlanta fans to get excited for the 2025 season.
