The Atlanta Falcons have a clear potential path when it comes to their current quarterback room and what should be done moving forward. Michael Penix Jr. and Tua Tagovailoa both appear extremely unlikely to be long-term answers and have their fair share of quarterback concerns. If the Falcons were looking to the future and considering the best chance of righting the franchise, there is zero question that Penix would start the season and Jack Strand would be given a chance if injury strikes or the starter underwhelms.
You're not winning anything of note with Tagovailoa in the lineup, and it seems unlikely that Penix is going to be the answer. With this in mind, the Falcons should throw Strand into the lineup at some point this season, understanding that it will either provide a surprise answer or help you tank and move closer to reaching one of next year's top quarterback prospects.
For each of the past three seasons, the Falcons have been just good enough to stay out of reach of the top prospects, but lack a franchise answer that puts them back into the national conversation. Strand going into the lineup after an impressive preseason performance aids this effort in the fact that you're likely going to be extremely limited offensively and push your record towards the bottom of the league.
The flip side of this is pointing out that perhaps the preseason was a hint at Strand's ceiling, and the Falcons could find a surprise answer. Either way that it plays out is in Atlanta's long-term favor and saves the team from dealing with its current questions at the position.
Falcons Should Consider Throwing Rookie Jack Strand Into Atlanta's Starting Lineup
With the number of questions facing the Falcons, it simply makes far too much sense not to consider giving the rookie a chance. The long-shot hope is that Penix is able to stay healthy early in the season and prove himself capable of being a franchise answer. Two years in and with three torn ACLs in his career, there is reason to wonder whether or not this is a legitimate possibility.
No matter the answer, the Falcons owe it to the franchise to find out and shouldn't hesitate to turn to Strand if things reach a potential answer. As miserable as tanking might be, it is hard to see another option for a team completely stuck in neutral.
Strand is a step in this direction, barring the young quarterback becoming a surprisingly capable option. No matter which direction you look at it from, there is no downside to the Falcons giving Strand a chance in the 2026 season.
