The Atlanta Falcons moved on from Younghoe Koo after the first two weeks of the season. Koo had cost the franchise multiple games in 2024 and missed a kick in Week 1 to force overtime. All of this set the stage for John Parker Romo to come in and go 5/5 in an impressive Sunday Night Football win over the Minnesota Vikings. Fast forward a week, and Romo now finds himself on the hot seat again after missing his two attempts this past Sunday. Two kicks the Falcons needed to help stop the bleeding and attempt to crawl back into the game.
While Romo was missing kicks, Koo found his next landing spot, taking advantage of the Graham Gano injury, signing with the New York Giants. Still, no matter how the signing goes for the Giants, the Falcons cannot have any regrets over the move. Koo was given every possible chance to redeem himself and prove that the end of last season was an outlier. Even with the implosion of Kirk Cousins, the Falcons are making the playoffs if Koo is the best version of himself.
Falcons Shouldn't Doubt Decision to Cut Younghoe Koo Despite Recent Red Flags
The performance from Romo is a concern, but the Falcons failed in all phases of the game on Sunday. It isn't the same as when the team has played well and Koo blew an opportunity. The loss to New Orleans a season ago, where Koo went 1/4 on FG attempts in a 20-17 loss, stands out as a clear example of why the Falcons moved on. Even if things turn around with the Giants, there is no denying that a change of scenery was needed.
Far too many misses in clutch spots had been ignored to continue to allow a once-beloved player to continue to start. With that said, head coach Raheem Morris is making it clear the Falcons will continue to compete at the position. Parker Romo's Week 3 failure was enough to get the attention of Morris and continue to hold the position open as Atlanta approaches an important Week 4 matchup against the Washington Commanders.
For Koo, this is a great opportunity that the veteran should take advantage of to get back on the right track. Before the 2024 season, there was no one you would rather have trot out with the game on the line for the Falcons. Being the definition of clutch before what appears to be simply a loss of confidence. Leaving no question that it was time to turn the page, no matter how Koo's New York tenure may go.
