The Atlanta Falcons' season has continued to quickly implode after losing quarterback Michael Penix Jr. for the remainder of the 2025 season due to a knee injury. Now, an already lost season has been placed in the hands of veteran Kirk Cousins. A move that is hardly inspiring any level of confidence, based on the level of play fans endured a season ago. With this in mind, the Falcons didn't hesitate to bring in a second option, adding former Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Kyle Trask to the practice squad earlier this week.

The Falcons now have Cousins, Trask, and Easton Stick rostered at the position, with it remaining very possible that Atlanta fans get to see all three signal-callers before the year is over. This all depends on which version of Cousins shows up over the next two weeks of the 2025 season.

Kirk Cousins Could Shape Kyle Trask's Playing Time with Falcons

If the veteran plays at the same level as we saw a season ago, there is zero reason not to give Trask an opportunity in the starting lineup. The former Bucs quarterback spent the four seasons with Atlanta's rival before being released ahead of the 2025 campaign. Trask spent time backing up both Tom Brady and Baker Mayfield before his release ahead of this season, giving him plenty of experience to call upon.

For Trask, this could be a final opportunity to secure his future as a backup option in this league. Sitting in free agency this deep into the season is telling of his current status and the struggle it could be moving forward to find another landing spot. The Falcons signed the veteran to the practice squad based on a sheer lack of remaining options.

Falcons' Desperation Could Benefit Trask

With Penix gone for the year, the Falcons were forced to make a desperation move to find a third option, and Trask was one of the few options. Still, it is an undeniable opportunity for the signal caller to attempt to put his career back on track. Based on Cousins' age and recent struggles, it isn't off the table that Trask is going to get a shot in the lineup.

Even if this isn't the case, the quarterback is being handed a chance to impress Atlanta and perhaps win a reserve job in the future. It could be a win-win deal for both sides.

For the Falcons, the only path to relevance is winning out the rest of the way. This appears incredibly unlikely based on the current injuries and the coaching struggles that have resulted in back-to-back overtime losses. Setting up a clear path for Trask to find relevance on a struggling Atlanta roster.
