With the Atlanta Falcons only having five picks in the 2025 NFL Draft, they had to hit a home run in the undrafted free agent period. The Falcons did just that, as they signed former San Jose State wide receiver Nick Nash and former Kansas cornerback Cobee Bryant, who both have strong chances to make the 53-man roster this summer.

While Nash and Bryant have received the most attention among the Falcons’ UDFA signings, Atlanta fans should not overlook linebacker Malik Verdon, who could make a run at a roster spot this summer.

Malk Verdon a Falcons Rookie With Chance to Make Roster

Verdon is listed as a linebacker by the Falcons, but spent his collegiate career at Iowa State as a defensive back. The 6-foot-4, 218-pound defender didn’t play much in his first two years with the Cyclones (five games).

However, Verdon started to make an impact in his last two seasons at Iowa State. In 2023, he had 47 total tackles, four pass breakups, and two interceptions in 10 games (nine starts).

Verdon was named honorable mention All-Big 12 Conference for his efforts, despite missing the final three games with a forearm injury. Last season, the physical defensive back took his game to another level.

Verdon racked up 76 combined tackles, five pass breakups, 3.5 tackles for loss, a sack, and an interception in 12 games (11 starts). He did all this despite missing two games with a forearm injury and playing with a cast. The 6-foot-4 defender was rewarded for his performance, being named second-team All-Big 12.

As an undrafted free agent, Verdon could be the perfect project for new defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich as they move him to linebacker. The former Iowa State defender can play the edge and apply pressure as a blitzer.

Verdon can also hold his own in pass coverage. He showed in college that he can play press man against tight ends. That type of versatility and skillset could help Verdon make the 53-man roster in Atlanta.

If you look at the Falcons' current inside linebackers, there’s much to be desired after Divine Deablo and Kaden Elliss. Troy Andersen could be a factor, but he’s struggled to stay healthy in his career. Then there’s also Josh Woods, JD Bertrand (fifth-round pick in 2024), and Nick Kubitz (another UDFA).

Simply put,  a job or two could be won this summer, and don’t be surprised if Verdon is in the mix.
