The Atlanta Braves have a long list of former players from an injury-plagued 2024 season who found new landing spots as Atlanta's roster returned to full strength. 2023 depth piece Nicky Lopez found a new team in the Chicago Cubs. Atlanta fans will remember the name from Lopez's 2023 Atlanta tenure, with the defensive infielder appearing in 26 games for the Braves.

Lopez is known for his speed and ability as a defensive replacement. This gives the infielder value as a potential final piece on a team's bench. However, a big part of why Lopez is so fondly remembered in Atlanta is the fact that in limited at-bats, the defender hit .277, which is far from his career norm. Now, the Braves could consider a reunion with the defender with the veteran falling out of Chicago's 2025 plans.

Braves Should Consider Bringing Nicky Lopez Back to Atlanta in a Reserve Role

If the Cubs' potential asking price is within Atlanta's comfort zone, a reunion could make sense for both sides. This is especially the case when you consider the Braves are already carrying Luke Williams and Stuart Fairchild on the active roster. Neither is a noted offensive contributor and are typically used as defensive replacements or speedy options to pinch run.

Lopez could easily be viewed as an upgrade over Luke Williams. This allows Atlanta further flexibility and gives the team an avenue to trade Orlando Arcia in favor of bringing in a more reliable pinch-hitting option. Regardless of whether it is in Atlanta or elsewhere, Lopez shouldn't have any problems finding another landing spot.

The veteran's value as a base runner and defender is going to allow him to continue his career despite the lack of offensive consistency. For the Cubs, it is an exciting page turn, allowing the team to bring in a top prospect to a team that has been one of the more exciting surprises of the 2025 season.

Still, it is bad news for Lopez that could be a blessing in disguise if the Braves continue this year's trend of walking down memory lane and attempt a reunion with the infielder.
